up the hill backwards, it'll be all right
top: thrift -- pants: thrift -- shoes: thrift -- jacket: vintage -- necklace: won from Sydney's giveaway!
I'm finally back with an outfit post! Hooray! I wasn't feeling especially inspired over the last couple of weeks, and when I was, I didn't have the time to take photos. But things are mellower now, and I'm feeling like I'm back in the game.
So, strictly speaking, these pants aren't flattering at all. But I love them anyway. They may make my butt look as saggy as a deflated balloon, but they're just so fun to wear. What do you guys think about wearing things you know are less-than-flattering? Is it ever a good idea?
I was so touched by the feedback on my last post about some mental health struggles that I've had. I really appreciate that so many of you took the time to comment and share some of your experiences, too. Writing is very near and dear to my heart, so your feedback has been really validating. I want to try to get back into writing--I'm actually thinking of starting a writing Tumblr or something.
Today's title comes from David Bowie -- "Up the Hill Backwards." The title/lyric of the song is such a great image of how life is: always working toward something with no ability to see what's coming next. All we can do is gaze upon the past. Oooh. Deep.
Speaking of David Bowie, on Friday, Alex and I watched Labyrinth, which was terrible/hilarious/awesome. I think the wine we were drinking enhanced the experience. (Sadly, the movie did not enhance the wine. Gotta spring for the $5 bottle next time.) Labyrinth contains what I have to say are The Worst Bowie songs I've ever heard. But it was fun, and I can't believe that I'd never seen it before.
On Saturday, I went with my photography class to a little town on the coast. We had breakfast together and then went shooting on a couple different beaches. It was a really wonderful time, in spite of the rain. I got some great shots that I can't wait to show you when I get a chance to scan them.
I got in some R&R on Sunday and spent yesterday in the darkroom. I'm really excited for the week ahead, and it's off to a good start :)
How did you spend your long weekend?

those pants are hilarious. i didn't get a long weekend.
you pulled off thsi outfit so well. love the stripes, the jean jacket and the baggy pants - you look so good, girl!
i've missed your outfit posts so this was refreshing to see. but hey, there are just some days that i dont feel inspired either - that's why its jeans and zip-up hoodies on most weekends. ;)
Wearing unflattering clothes for the heck of it is pretty much a hobby of mine. I mean, if I recognize that I look ridiculous, it makes it, like, cool right? Haha.
I'm glad you had a good weekend, and I know what you mean about Labyrinth. Its kind of like a car accident...you just can't look away :)
I used to love the shit out of the Labyrinth when I was a kid. And I also love the shit out of wearing weird pants. I always wear these high-waisted pleated things that no one appreciates but me. But you look cute and not like you're wearing diapers (which is how I look).
I'm glad you're back! I missed you!
I don't think we always have to wear things that are flattering; fashion is for fun, not so we can always look 'the most beautiful'. Anyway, I think those pants look fabulous on you. Also love Labryinth. David Bowie and his package!
I've been so behind on reading blogs the past couple of weeks, so I just read your post about your struggles with being bipolar. Thank you so much for sharing that, it's so brave of you. It's amazing that your family is so open with talking about it, that must provide a wonderful support system. There is a history of bipolar and depression in my family, but we seem to try and brush it under the rug instead of talking and being open about it. You're so strong for going through all of this and sharing it with us, it makes me admire you even more <3 (and it was wonderfully written. you have a very eloquent writing style and i would definitely read your writing tumlr.)
anyway, i am loving your pants here. i think a lot of "fashion" is not really flattering, but it's so much fun to wear anyway! your high waisted pants are a perfect example of that. they are awesome.
i'm so glad you got my giveaway package! can't wait to see you rock the lipstick ;)
i hope you're having a great week! <3
Ok so here's the thing. YOU LOOK AWESOME IN THOSE PANTS. Although all signs point towards those pants being a no go, you actually pull them off & make them rather chic.
but really Sophi... Why oh WHY had you not seen Labyinth before?!
*Labyrinth
Sorry to waste a whole comment with a spelling correction but it was annoying me.
Eeep, spending the day photographing the beach sounds like an absolute dream! You are one lucky, lucky lady...
And when I actually think about it, I wear unflattering pieces so often... I don't believe it's necessarily a bad thing though because having a cute outfit isn't always about how figure flattering the pieces are. Grandpa cardigans are some of the cutest pieces of clothing, but very unshapely. I still love them to death though!
I spent my weekend doing absolutely nothing! haha so funny you said that, I was just about to say that I thought those pants looked amazing on you ;) but they do! they're just so fun! hope you're having a great weeeeek!
xoxo
I am kind of in love with those pants. I have been looking for a pair at every thrift store I visit but I have had no luck. I actually think that the pants are quite flattering! With that shirt and jean jacket, the outfit is perfect. xoxo
