love is overtaking me

First things first, congratulations to Jane of Jane + Jenthe lucky winner of TheMilkCo vintage purse giveaway!

A huge thanks to all of you who entered! I'm hoping to do a little giveaway over the holidays, so stay tuned :)

And now, what I wore yesterday. It was dusk-status dark until noon, and it was intermittently pouring. My agenda for the day was the really exciting prospect of sitting in the media lab all day editing my video art piece in FinalCut. All things considered, it was a definite dressing-for-comfort kind of day. Thanks to my mom for snapping some photos :)

coat: thrifted Eddie Bauer, $8 -- tunic: American Apparel, $18 -- cardigan: thrift, $2 -- jeggings: Levi's, $40, present from my mom -- boots: vintage, $14

I thought it would be neat to show you what I wear on the days when I'm uninspired and more motivated by practical concerns than aesthetic ones. Over break I've been kind of depressed, actually, and I haven't really been pulling out the sartorial stops. Nothing in particular is really eating away at me; it's really just the combination of lame little things. I have tons of assignments due this week, it's been rainy and gloomy outside, I wasn't able to see Alex nearly as much as I'd hoped, neither of my sisters could come home for Thanksgiving, I've been lonely without the social stimulation of college... I spent the whole week almost exclusively listening to The Smiths, which, as much as I love them, can't have helped my mood.

I bought some dark green pearlescent nail polish...

It's quite festive, no?

Anyway, this week is going to be killer in terms of stress levels, but I must say that having classes to attend and places to go will be just the dose of style motivation I need.

What do you like to wear on days when you're feeling down? What do you having going on this week?

Today's title comes from Arthur Russel -- Love Is Overtaking Me, a really beautiful song by a fascinating artist.

This is an adorable practical outfit. Personally, when I'm feeling a bit down I use my clothes to create a happy mood, which usually involves polka-dots and a skirt. My week should be pretty mellow after tomorrow when I have a major presentation to give in front of my school board, yikes!

Aw, Soph! Cheer up, it's almost Christmas, and Molly and I will fly west and north, respectively, to be at your side. Also, your "comfy" day is more stylish than the days when I try to look good.

At first I thought you had a matching yellow (not leopard-skin)pillbox hat on, too, but then I realized it was just the sun on your hair. I'm also now convinced on the merits of jeggings, but $40? That's crazy. Also, please thrift me something for Christmas?

I hope you feel better soon, I totally get that rut you're in. I am sort of experiencing the same thing, for some reason my boyfriend has been out of it lately. Usually he's this cheery, funny, sweet guy, but the last week or so he has had no energy and he's been quite distant. After 6 years together I know that's just the way he is, a fickle little bitch (haha) but it still gets me down too. He's sort of the most important person in my life and I need to feel that closeness to him.

And yeah, lots of work for uni, shit weather, not a lot of class (I even need to skip class because of all the work I have to do) = blergh

but you do look adorable. Very pretty casual look. The cown neck golden top is beautiful and makes the look sing: great styling!

Btw about Ana Mendieta: I almost feel as if her earth-woman pictures have a quite negative undertone, not serene or peaceful or anything a man portraying a woman in nature would picture. In the picture with the bushes, she looks dead and almost killed by nature. In the picture in the water, she appears to have drowned, face down, again overpowered by nature. The picture with the trees also have this suffocating, claustrofobic vibe if you ask me.

You could almost see her work as a feminist critique of women's association with nature by men, or just an allover expression of unease, even in peaceful nature.

that's just my idea though :D

I am truly touched that you were missing me. I was missing you too, Sophster. And on the days when I am in a funk, at least since September, I wear one of Andrew's shirts that he gave me, a soft soft flannel, Andrew's jeans he gave me, and moose socks. The last part is important. Norwegian moose socks are a fashion must. mostly I'm just a sap who misses her boyfriend, but the moose make the outfit.

so...i am a comfort over style girl so when when im dressing down its really DOWN!! though i do say american apparel is a good go to for the dress down days if i still want to maintain a little chic cred.

about the fictional characters: I don't necessarily "like" them all. I had a discussion with my boyfriend about these kind of lists, and I had two thoughts about it: the sort of characters you choose says a lot about who you are (for instance, I chose a lot of forever young characters, or characters with a childish streak, because maintaining a bit of childishness and starry-eyedness is a concern of mine - I do not want to grow jaded), and that my list mostly consists of characters I find highly HUMAN. Not nice, cool, enviable or someone I'd aspire to be per se, but "real" people who have been nicely written to describe a certain type of people almost everyone knows from their own experiences.

Jimmy is an annoying juvenile brat, but his feelings in Dr Jimmy are SUCH a gorgeous description of young bravado and teen angst that it just immediately spoke to me. That sense of being invincible and all over the place and ignorant and lost all at the same time, I love that about Jimmy. Patrick Bateman is an annoying prick as well, but when the end of the novel shows us that nothing really happened and he was just some loser with perverse illusions, somehow he becomes so very human. Even failing in straying from his very mundane life. Just another loser.

I'd love to hear some of your loved characters :D
